Apple's iOS 4.3 has been jailbroken - good news for anyone who wants to install apps that haven't made it through - or can't pass - the Mac maker's iTunes App Store vetting process.

Better still, the jailbreak is 'untethered' - it doesn't require you to hook up your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to iTunes whenever you restart the device.

As yet, you can't use the jailbreak. It has been demo'd on video - nothing to see, just the independent software repository, Cydia, running - where it's called an "alpha" release.

The usual port of call for background info on this kind of thing is the website of iOS hackers the iPhone Dev Team. But their blog was down at the time of writing.

Hopefully they'll be back up shortly with updated jailbreaking tools. ®
