Microsoft went to a lot of effort to find the right person to head up its global advertising unit last summer, but after less than a year Carolyn Everson has quit Redmond for a job with Facebook.

All Things Digital broke the news yesterday that Everson had been hired by Facebook as its global sales veep.

The social data hoarder confirmed the move, which may upset the exec board at Microsoft, given the software vendor's close investor and partner ties with Facebook.

This was seemingly acknowledged by Mark Zuckerberg's Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg.

“Microsoft was one of our earliest partners and is still one of our most valued. We have a long and strong relationship that includes search ads on our site, a social layer on Bing search results and a deep and popular integration with Xbox," she said.

"They are a leader when it comes to unlocking the power of social for their already popular products and services. We look forward to continuing to expand our relationship with them.”

Microsoft, whose celebratory press release about Everson's arrival at Redmond back in June is here, declined to comment. ®
