A Frenchman faces jail for sending a risqué email to a high-profile female politician.

Glamourous MEP Rachida Dati complained to the police after an unnamed 40-year-old wrote to her asking for an "inflation", the Telegraph reports.

The request was a reference to a recent, widely-reported Freudian slip by Dati, who confused the French words for inflation and fellatio in a radio interview.

Talking about overseas investment funds she said: "I see some of them looking for returns of 20 or 25 per cent, at a time when fellatio is almost non-existent."

She apparently didn't see the funny side of the email however, and after tracking the man down via his IP address, Lyon's Judicial Police raided his home and arrested him. Following 48 hours in custody, he faces a prison sentence of up to a month and a fine of up to €10,000 on charges of "displaying contempt towards a public servant".

Dati was formerly a member of President Sarkozy's cabinet. After she left the government under a cloud, reports linked her to false rumours that Sarkozy and Carla Bruni were both having affairs. ®
