The website of a Swedish far-right party was hacked on Saturday, the day before national elections which resulted in its first ever electoral success.

Instead of the usual political content, visitors to the homepage of the Sweden Democrats were treated to a picture of a birthday cake with a rendition of Ellen McLain's Still Alive playing in the background, The Local reports.

The motives, much less the identity, of the defacers remain unclear.

"I think it is a shame," Sweden Democrats spokesman Erik Almqvist told AFP. "Our political opponents should take the debate with us if they disagree with us."

The Sweden Democrats (SD) styles itself as a nationalist party. It rejects multiculturalism and wants to wants to restrict immigration, including funding a voluntary repatriation program to pay immigrants to return home.

The party won 20 seats on Sunday, with a 5.7 per cent share of the vote, and entered parliament for the first time.

The governing centre-right coalition, The Alliance, is on track to win 172 or 173 seats, with almost all the results in. Although that leaves it two seats short of a majority in the Riksdag its leader, Fredrik Reinfeldt, said it has no intention of cutting a deal with the SD. ®
