Red Hat is in talks to buy a JBoss cloud provisioning startup called Makara, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Makara – a Red Hat JBoss partner – produces a portal enabling IT teams to set up, provision, and administer public Amazon and private Xen and VMware clouds.

The two-year old company is believed to have met with virtualization giant VMware, who turned down the prospect of a deal.

In June. Makara announced its Makara Cloud for JBoss at JBoss World, to manage and move applications running on Red Hat's open-source Java application server to the cloud.

The company’s chief executive and co-founder Isaac Roth held various positions with application management specialist Wily Technology bought by CA in 2006.

Red Hat declined to comment, while Makara did not respond by time of writing.

JBoss is Makara's latest addition. The company already offered its service for Amazon's EC2 charged on an hourly basis and for Xen and VMware vCloud virtualization charged under both an annual subscription and a customized price.

Makara says it delivers cloud provisioning, elastic scaling, built-in monitoring, stack configuration, log aggregation, and auditing of all changes with a drag-and-drop interface.

Red Hat, meanwhile, is throwing everything its got at cloud computing. The company's Cloud Foundations initiative packages Linux, virtualization and middleware to help customers build clouds. Last year, Red Hat announced its Delta Cloud APIs have been submitted to the Distributed Management Task Force to help establish them as standards.

Cloud Foundations, meanwhile, uses Cloud Engine, the Enterprise MRG grid and messaging middleware equipped with a forthcoming hypervisor, due with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 to control quality of service levels of VMs.

Cloud Engine includes an administrator portal for controlling users, groups, and permissions, storage management software, billing and accounting modules, resource management tools, and a job scheduler. ®
