Two years more

We hear that Hitachi Data Systems may have extended its OEM agreement with BlueArc for an additional two years, meaning a nice vote of support.

The OEM deal was originally signed in December 2006 with a five year life, meaning it would end in December 2011. HDS took BlueArc's high-end Titan network-attached storage (NAS) product and invested an undisclosed amount of cash in the company.

HDS took on BlueArc's smaller Mercury NAS products in September last year, reintegrating the components in a smaller form factor as the Hitachi NAS 3080 and 3090.

A BlueArc spokesperson said: "Yes, we did extend and enhance the relationship with HDS about three months ago. A number of the provisions in the deal were already expiring, or milestones were being hit, so it made sense to revisit the deal."

BlueArch has just announced $20m more funding from investors. The investors must surely have known that HDS was extending this OEM deal. That told them HDS had faith in BlueArc and its product roadmap, which must have had a positive influence on them placing hands in pockets and pulling out cash for BlueArc. ®
