O2 dithers over Apple iPhone 4 refund pledge

Existing Ts&Cs apply for now, says carrier

Apple may have said it will offer iPhone 4 customers a full refund if they return the handset within 30 days of purchase, but O2 is sticking to its 14-day returns policy.

O2 yesterday followed up a couple of 'we'll tell you more soon' messages posted on its website on the Friday of Apple's iPhone 4 press conference and right after the weekend, stating: "We said on Monday that we needed time to work out details with Apple and this work is continuing."

On the subject of iPhone 4 returns, O2 said: "We’re still working on the plans for how this new Apple process will work for our customers."

However, it added, for now "our usual returns policy still applies". According to the operator's website, this policy amounts to:

"If the product you’ve bought isn’t quite what you wanted, you’ve got up to 14 days to:

"1. Swap it for something else - you can only do this once. If you choose a more expensive product, you’ll need to pay the difference, or

"2. Get your money back."

Friday's Apple press conference say CEO Steve Jobs pledge a "full refund" if a punter brings back an undamaged iPhone 4 up to 30 days after purchase. "We've waived any restocking fee, anything, full refund," he said.

Later, during the Q&A, Jobs was asked if that policy would apply to carrier contracts and he said: "I believe so, yes."

O2 is expected to announce how it will respond to Jobs' promise later this week. Other UK carriers have not addressed this thorny issue in public. ®
