Facebook has confirmed it is investigating a problem that means that some users are failing to receive notification when a contact sends them a private message through the site.

Normally a copy of a message is sent to a user's registered email address. However over recent weeks some users have noticed this was not happening, prompting the posts to a BlackBerry group on Facebook about the problem. So far the thread contains 122 entries.

In a statement prompted by El Reg's inquiry on the matter, Facebook said it had begun investigating the glitch, whose precise cause remains unclear.

We are aware that a small minority of our users are experiencing problems with email notifications. We are actively investigating the issue at the moment and hope to resolve it soon.

El Reg learnt of the problem from reader James E, who explained the issue has been a source of confusion since it first appeared, around four weeks ago.

"Since sometime around June 10 large numbers of users have stopped receiving notification emails," he explained. "Thus far FB have posted nothing about it and are not responding to help requests on the issue. There's some very pissed off people out there though as they start realising it's not their mail setups causing the problem." ®
