Sony is to upgrade the capacity of the PlayStation 3's hard drive in Japan at the end of the month, paving the way for a similar boost over here.

The PS3 currently comes with a choice of 120GB or 250GB hard drive, but two new models out on 29 July in the Land of the Rising Sun see that capacity rise to 160GB and 320GB, respectively.

new machines' model numbers are CECH-2500A and CECH-2500B - the current models, tweaked in March, are the CECH-2100A and CECH-2100B.

The new numbers appeared on the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) website last month, so it's clear the higher-capacity units are certainly coming to North America. It seems very unlikely Sony won't bring them to the UK too.

This won't help folk who already own a PS3, of course, but they may well have upgraded their console's hard drive manually - not a difficult process, as you can see here. ®
