Apple: we've sold a lot of iPhone 4s

More than 1.7m, apparently

Can 1.7m punters be wrong? That's how many folk had snapped up Apple's iPhone 4 by close of play Saturday, 26 June - three days after the handset went on sale.

CEO Steve Jobs apologised today "to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply".

Maybe they were just queuing wrong, eh, Steve?

Whatever, the iPhone 4 is officially Apple's most successful product launch, the company said, though if there's no clear resolution to the debate over signals and metal cases, it could also prove to be Apple's biggest PR disaster.

That said, our iPhone 4 shows the same signal strength shifts that past iPhones have - and for that we feel is more attributable to the O2 network we happen to be using than to the hardware.

But we're watching how this issue develops.

Meantime, if you want to risk it, the iPhone 4 is available now - unlocked if you buy it from Apple. ®
