Stephen Conroy has pledged to protect Australians from the threat of spam through their portals.

The Australian communications minister made the brave pledge this week as he kicked off the lucky country's National Cyber Security Awareness Week.

The minister, who some cruelly believe is himself the biggest threat to Australia's internet security, advocated a six-step program to enable worried Aussies to protect themselves online.

He said: “The Awareness Week aims to educate and empower people with the information, confidence and practical tools they need to protect themselves online.” If that sounds like he was reading from an auto cue, you could be right.

Conroy quickly lapsed into gibberish though, according to Australian Personal Computer Magazine, which forced some poor hack to actually write down his words:

“There’s a staggering number of Australians being in having their computers infected at the moment, up to 20,000 — uh — can regularly be getting infected by these spams or scams, that come through the portal."
