Tesco IT director gets top job
Sir Terry hands down the golden Clubcard
Tesco's IT director will take over as boss of the country's largest retailer when Sir Terry Leahy steps down as chief executive next March, it was announced this morning.
Philip Clarke, 50, will take the helm after 29 years at Tesco.
As well as overseeing the group's IT operations and strategy, Clarke is currently in charge of its expansion into Europe and Asia. Over the years he has worked as a store manager, buyer and marketer.
Last year Clarke trousered a basic salary of £792,000, plus £38,000 in benefits, £712,000 in cash bonuses, £712,000 in shares and £480,000 in long term incentives. His total package of £2.7m compared to £5.1m for his boss Leahy.
As IT chief he supervised a major offshoring scheme that saw 400 support jobs moved to India. ®
