Novell swings into MeeGo throng
Me too MeeGo
Novell has joined Nokia and Intel in backing the new MeeGo platform, which is unsurprising given its absorption of the Novell-backed Moblin platform.
Novell will put MeeGo on top of SUSE Linux, and push it out to notebook and netbook manufacturers as an alternative to desktop operating systems, just as it did with Moblin. So not a radical change, really.
Not that netbook Linux has been an unqualified success, despite Novell's assertion that "large ODMs, including Samsung and MSI, have shipped netbook and mobile devices powered by SUSE Moblin". That might be true, but Samsung is something of a Don Juan when it comes to operating systems, while MSI has been showing off portable kit running Android and Windows 7 recently, so neither are exactly loyal to the brand.
But Novell could hardly continue offering SUSE with Moblin on top when the platform was being folded into MeeGo, so the company has announced an active participation in the MeeGo project and will be demonstrating SUSE MeeGo at the COMPUTEX conference about to start in Taipei. ®
