A Microsoft veteran has reportedly left the software giant and taken on the role of chief technology officer at AOL.

Alex Gounares, whose most recent job at Microsoft involved overseeing its advertising research and development unit, joined the company in 1993.

Redmond hasn’t confirmed the move, but according to All Things Digital’s Kara Swisher, who cites several sources close to the situation, Microsoft employees were told on Friday about Gounares’ departure.

The report said Gounares would take on the job of CTO at AOL after it was left vacant by Ted Cahall, who quit the struggling internet company in January this year.

In October last year, ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley reported that Microsoft diluted Gounares’ role by cutting off his management of ad engineering. ®
