Servers feel the strain

Sony has coughed to a series of woes affecting gamers trying to pay for content on its PlayStation Network following a major behind-the-scenes upgrade applied to the online service yesterday.
The new PlayStation Network Store went live yesterday morning and to encourage some purchasing activity, Sony announced dozens of special offers on downloadable games, add-ons, themes, avatars and the like.
Then came reports from customers that they were being prevented from topping up their virtual wallets with credit or debit card payments. Others saw their wallet credit limits unexpectedly reduced, or more PSN transactions being billed to their cards than they anticipated. Some game content could not be downloaded.
Sony today formally acknowledged the problems and said it was working on resolving them. It apologised for any inconvenience caused.
The consumer electronics giant tacitly blamed high customer activity for some of the problems and urged customers to try to re-download content or to top up their wallets during "off-peak" hours - morning and early afternoon, basically.
It also pledged to refund any extraneous debits made to customers' cards within the next 24 hours, and to ensure accounts correctly reflect top-ups made to them. ®
