Sony Ericsson is to update its Xperia X10 smartphone - reviewed here - with Android 2.1, but you're going to have to wait until October for it.

"We can also confirm that the X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro will be upgraded to Android version 2.1, during Q4 2010," the company's bloggers said this week.

They revealed that the X10's UXP user interface will be updated to improve its key apps Timescape and Mediascape. The handset will also gain DLNA access to content stored on networked home computers and servers.

The X10 will also gain the same video capabilities as SE's Vivaz cameraphone: 720p HD. You can read our Vivaz review here.

If you're an X10 owner and you don't relish waiting until Q4 for a firmware patch, SE also noted that a "smaller software update" design to "enhance the usability and performance" of the phone will be released in the "next couple of weeks". ®
