Bad timing?

Apple pushed out an update for QuickTime on Wednesday that fixes 16 vulnerabilities, many critical.

Users of both Windows and Apple systems are advised to upgrade to guard against flaws that mean playing malformed media files using older versions of QuickTime can drop malware onto vulnerable systems.

Malicious image files also pose a problem for versions of QuickTime prior to 7.6.6, as explained in Apple's advisory here.

iTunes is integrated with QuickTime which means many millions of internet users will need to update their media player software.

The QuickTime update follows just two days after a major security updates to Mac OS X on Monday. This smacks of bad housekeeping on Apple's part and ought to prompt consideration of whether a regular patch update cycle makes more sense than springing updates on users.

Adobe, Cisco and Oracle have adopted quarterly patch updates for their products after Microsoft introduced monthly updates back in 2003. ®
