A teacher in Southern California has been arrested and jailed for being drunk in charge of a class of schoolchildren.

The Desert Sun reports that unfortunate corduroy Tonya Neff, 47, was arrested "on suspicion of felony child endangerment" and transported to the Riverside County jail in Indio, after administrators at Toro Canyon Middle School called in the Sheriff's Department.

“There was never any threat to the students," said Coachella Valley school superintendent Ricardo Medina.

School management had handled the "unfortunate situation" in an "appropriate manner”, he added. “They involved the police when they felt they needed to involve the police.”

Sheriff's deputies issued a statement saying that Neff had taken prescription drugs and alcohol, and that "a container with an alcoholic beverage inside was found". Treatment by the school nurse was followed by arrival of the local heat and a trip to hospital - and thence onward to jail.

The teacher, a new employee at Toro Canyon, will be placed on leave while the Sheriff's investigation is carried out.
