Microsoft talks up Windows 7 SP1, shy on dates

'Go ahead and deploy… you know you want to! ;-)'

Microsoft revealed a few more details about Windows 7 Service Pack 1 yesterday, confirming it would involve a small-fry update to the operating system.

However, the software vendor didn't reveal when a finalised version of Windows 7 SP1 - nor indeed a beta - of the updates package would land.

"For Windows 7, SP1 includes only minor updates, among which are previous updates that are already delivered through Windows Update," wrote Microsoft's Brandon LeBlanc in a blog post yesterday.

"SP1 for Windows 7 will, however, deliver an updated Remote Desktop client that takes advantage of RemoteFX introduced in the server-side with SP1 for Windows Server 2008 R2."

RemoteFX is the virtualised graphics and media-processing feature that Microsoft picked up with its acquisition of Calista Technologies more than two years ago, more about which here.

LeBlanc unsurprisingly said that customers mulling an upgrade to Windows 7 shouldn't sit it out until SP1 for the operating system rocks up. ®
