Microsoft claimed yesterday that it had sold 90 million copies of Windows 7 since it hit manufacturers in July 2009.

Speaking at a Morgan Stanley-sponsored tech, media and telecoms conference on Tuesday, Microsoft's CFO Peter Klein said the vendor had seen bumper sales of its current operating system to date.

Windows 7 arrived on retail shelves in October last year.

Redmond also wrote a self-congratulatory blog post about the hefty sales figure.

"We're humbled and excited that people are responding so positively to Windows 7 - our customers have made it the fastest selling operating system in history," it claimed.

In January Microsoft bragged that Windows 7 demand had propelled it towards record second quarter revenue and profit. However, businesses have so far largely stuck by their aged Windows XP-based kit, with MS hardware partner Intel being a perfect case in point.

Gartner said in January that the Windows 7 launch had not created additional PC demand, but that it had been a good "market tool". ®
