World+Dog bought 211m tellies during 2009, two per cent more than the number shipped in 2008 despite an eight per cent decline in the average price.

The vast majority of them were LCDs. In Q4 2009 alone, some 50.73m LCD TVs shipped worldwide, compared to 12.31m CRTs and 4.72m plasma sets, market watcher DisplaySearch said this week.

The quarter's LCD shipments were up 50 per cent on recession-hit Q4 2008's total, but plasma shipments rose by only six per cent. CRT shipments fell 37 per cent year on year.

DisplaySearch estimates that only 400 OLED TVs shipped worldwide in Q4 2009. While that's 193 per cent higher than the number that shipping in Q3 2009 - 207 units - that growth was purely seasonal. Year on year, OLED TV shipments fell 33 per cent, so it's no wonder Sony is stepping back from the technology.

Instead, it's focusing on 3D and LED technologies, both part of the top end of the LCD business. DisplaySearch said LED-backlit sets accounted for just four per cent of Q4 2009's LCD TV shipments, thanks to their high price premium. LED TVs accounted for 11 per cent of the 40in-and-up segment, and 23 per cent of 50in-and-up market.

Samsung was the most successful vendor during the quarter, racking up a market share of 23.9 per cent by revenue, DisplaySearch said. LG followed some way behind with a share of 13 per cent, and Sony took third place with a share of 11.5 per cent.

For the top three, the quarter's market share largely matched the companies' full-year market share.

Panasonic - eight per cent share in Q4 2009 - and Sharp - 5.4 per cent - rounded out the list of the world's top five telly makers. These two and Sony all experienced falling revenue year on year, down three per cent, 23 per cent and 18 per cent, respectively.

Samsung's telly revenues were up 13 per cent year on year, LG's up 20 per cent. ®
