MWC Orange will release HTC's upcoming Android-based smartphone, Desire, in April.

Desire sports a 3.7in, 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreen and contains a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. There's 512MB of on-board memory and the handset can take Micro SDHC cards of up to 32GB capacity.

The phone runs Android 2.1, HTC said.

It has a 5Mp autofocus camera and assisted GPS - which Orange's own Orange Maps taps into for satnav duties. Orange has customised the UI to add links to its own TV, Photography and Games services.

Orange will offer the Desire for free on "selected" pay monthly tariffs, though it didn't say how much they will cost, or provide specifics on the duration of the contract. ®
