If snowy sports are your thing, the BBC will be broadcasting the 2010 Winter Olympics in their entirety in HD, free-to-air satellite service Freesat has revealed.

Freesat's aim in releasing this titbit is to persuade sporty types to invest in a Freesat-branded HD TV or set-top box, and a satellite dish.

But we note that since it's the BBC that's doing the transmitting, all of this alpine goodness will presumably be available on Freeview HD too, if you're lucky enough to live in an area where HD is now being broadcast terrestrially.

The Winter Olympics' opening ceremony takes place on 12 February. We call on set-top box makers to extract their digits and release Freeview HD kit pronto, if not in time for the Vancouver game then at least for other upcoming knocking-a-ball-around stuff.

The World Cup, Rugby Six Nations, Golf Masters and Wimbledon will all be available on the BBC HD Channel, Freesat said, with the FA Cup, England World Cup internationals and UEFA Champions league matches over on ITV1 HD. ®
