Yank walks plank over Liverpool fan email
Director suggests to supporter: 'Blow me'
Supporters of Liverpool FC have succeeded in getting Tom Hicks Jr to quit his post as club director after he fired an email broadside at a fan's "polite enquiry about the funding challenge facing Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez during this transfer window".
Hicks Jr, the son of Liverpool's co-owner Tom Hicks, impolitely replied to Stephen Horner's question: “Blow me, ****face. Go to hell. I’m sick of you.”
The outrage prompted the Spirit Of Shankly supporters' union to demand satisfaction, and that Hicks "do what any honourable person would do and to resign".
Since buying the club back in 2007, US tycoons Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr haven't exactly been welcomed with open arms by the Liverpool faithful. Despite "big promises", they have since "taken the club into debt, failed to deliver the promised new stadium, restricted Rafael Benitez’s spending in the transfer market and, perhaps most damagingly of all, alienated the supporters", as the Times puts it.
Hicks Jr's departure represents a "small but significant" victory in the Spirit Of Shankly's struggle to send his dad and Gillett Jr packing. The union's ultimate aim is "supporter ownership of Liverpool Football Club", its website notes. ®
