Samsung has gone back to the drawing board to improve the resolution of its colour-capable electronic paper.

Samsung will mass produce its colour e-paper within two years

The company first demoed a prototype 10.2in colour e-paper panel with 320 x 240 resolution back in June 2009. However, the firm has just unveiled a similar size screen with a 450 x 600 resolution.

Displayed at the ongoing FPD International tech show in Japan, Samsung’s latest colour e-screen is 0.7mm thick and has a 10:1 contrast ratio. Its reflectance level is 12 per cent, according to a report by website Tech-On.

The screen is a combination of E Ink-made e-paper, a colour filter and a glass TFT substrate - the latter means it won’t bend the way a previously seen colour e-paper prototype from Fujitsu could.

It doesn’t appear as though Samsung’s latest e-paper can display video content either, as its previous prototype screen could when switched over into "dynamic mode".

Nonetheless, Samsung obviously has more faith in its latest colour e-paper because the firm plans to start mass-producing it within two years. It’s unclear at this stage what sort of gadget the colour e-paper screen will end up in. ®
