STEC notches up LSI win

How Engenious

LSI is to use STEC ZeusIOPS enterprise flash drives in its products, following the example of EMC's Symmetrix and Clariion arrays and arrays from many other storage vendors.

Vic Mahadevan, the LSI Engenio product marketing and management VP, stated the obvious: "We selected STEC as our SSD provider based on their experience, knowledge and the proven track record of their enterprise SSD technology deployments."

This continues the pretty much wall-to-wall STEC wipeout of storage arrays, with Intel only being used by Dell/EqualLogic and - subject to satisfying reliability and performance concerns - Pillar Data Systems.

Of course, all this could change next year with Pliant SSDs being added to the list of enterprise flash drive suppliers, and SMART picking Sandforce controllers for its flash drop-in replacement product for hard drives.

LSI thinks the time is ripe to have flash drives as an option in mid-range storage arrays. Interestingly another part of LSI has been associated with controller developments for Seagate's coming flash drive. The LSI controller technology involved in that clearly cut no ice with the Engenio engineers when they were looking at their flash drive options. ®
