Apple won't take tablet to September iPod event, says mole

Bitter pill for fanboys to swallow?

Desperate for iTablet news, World+Dog is reporting that Apple will host a music-centric event on 9 September.

And... er... that's it.

Yes, all Apple has to do is issue an invite and bloggers' pants moisten with anticipation.

Actually, it has yet to issue the invite, but sources close to the company have told one Wall Street Journal blogger that the big day is 9 September. Others have already said a meeting will take place during the "week commencing 7 September".

Apple always hosts an event late in August or early in September, typically to announce a new iPod line-up. Souped-up camera-equipped iPod Touches are almost certainly on the agenda, and the rumour mill has been whirring busily to talk of a new version of iTunes that integrates Facebook and other such sites to allow teens to tell the world what they've just downloaded off BitTorrent (surely, 'listening to after an iTunes purchase'? - Ed).

Apple's 'Cocktail' album packaging technology must be a candidate too, but who apart from the record labels really cares about that? The days of passing round album sleeves to admire the Hipgnosis artwork are long since past. Sleeve notes even more so.

WSJ hack John Paczkowski's source says the event "will not involve any discussion whatsoever of the tablet Apple is reportedly developing".

We can imagine Steve Jobs, health permitting, whipping one out ahead of an early 2010 - ie. Macworld - unveiling, just as he did with the Apple TV a few years back. But the then iTV wasn't the subject of furious speculation the way the iTablet is, so it may choose to keep quiet and let the rumour mill spin on its behalf. ®
