Geeks Guide2 It's the start of another sweltering British summer month and the beginning of yet another set of Geeks Guide2 offers. We begin with 40% off The Google Way from French author and management consultant Bernard Girard.
The Google Way analyses the elements and philosophies that have made Google into the force it is today. Divided into four parts, it first recaps Google's history and illustrates how early concepts and ideas by founders Page and Brin correlate with, and have been developed to fit, the company's current economic model. This is swiftly followed by a look at how Google focuses on users and automation, and how by disregarding the business-school of thought, Google has revolutionised key business areas from team management to product conception.
From the outset, Girard explains that Google's culture is one of innovation, and large portions of the book shed light on ten elements that have driven Google's innovation and given rise to its success. Company philosophies which are central to this culture, such as its elitist recruitment strategy and the notorious 20 percent rule, are explained and reflected upon in detail.
It's this reflection, in combination with its use of interviews conducted with former Google employees, which separates the book from the alternatives available. Many Google books simply provide the information available in the public domain, however Girard adds to this exclusive primary research and analysis - providing an opinion on Google strategies, how they contribute to its success and how other companies can, or have, adapted these philosophies to their own advantage.
The later stages of the book examine Page's mantra of 'put users first, the rest will follow', however this is somewhat overshadowed by discussion of the challenges that Google faces in the future. Girard delves into post-recession forecasts, the ability for Google to sustain its immense growth, and its model for future product development, all of which offer an interesting pause for thought. Unfortunately, some key issues seem to be somewhat brief, such as copyright (Google Books) and privacy (Street View), and are not discussed in anywhere near the detail they deserve.
Overall, The Google Way is a quick and easy read for anybody involved in the IT industry. While it doesn't promote a copy and paste management method to improve your own business (if only) - it does offer an insight into one of our industry's most innovative companies and one which will help shape the future of IT for many years to come.
