Net security firm WatchGuard has acquired privately-held email and web security firm BorderWare Technologies, of Toronto, Canada.

Terms of the deal, announced Tuesday, were undisclosed. Watchguard said the deal will allow it to add BorderWare's messaging, content security and cloud-based security services to its portfolio.

Watchguard promised no immediate changes to BorderWare's product portfolio or channel programs. BorderWare, which was founded in 1994, employs 90 people.

Although neither firm said so, the acquisition has the hallmarks of two smaller players consolidating forces, in order to better compete with industry giants such as Symantec in tough economic times. Rumours of the pending tie-up began circulating in the channel last week, CRN reports. ®
