Cisco website down

Cisco? Grip up lads...

The main Cisco website is down while it is "being updated."

Attempts to access www.cisco.com around 3pm were met with this error message: "An error occurred while processing your request. Reference #97.320dd58.1249393806.999942"

This is a strange tack to take for the world's largest networking products company: to shut its entire world-wide web presence down for an update.

As at 14:55 today, the site has been down for more than thirty minutes or more. One tweet suggested it had been down since before 2pm.

We tried to find out why the site was down, but Cisco in the US was of little use. Tony Anthony, Senior Marketing Manager for Cisco DataCenter Products in Richardson, Texas, was surprised to hear that the site was down. Cisco in San Jose is not yet operational in a normal, business hours office sense and wasn't able to answer any questions.

Cisco UK at Feltham answered a telephone inquiry as to why the website was down by saying it was being updated. How long does it take for a closure-for-update to become an outage?

Shortly after 15.30 the site was back up after an outage lasting between one and two hours.

In a business continuity sense this is not a good example for Cisco to set. ®
