iRiver has inked plans to create an Android-based portable media player (PMP) designed to tackle the mighty iPod Touch.

Danny Bejanoff, the iRiver project manager for Aussie distributor C.R. Kennedy, said the PMP will be called the K2 and that it may feature a 3.5in touch-sensitive display, according to a report by website Current.

A wide selection of iPod Touch-grade features have been earmarked for possible inclusion on the K2, including a web browser, Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth, accelerometer and digital TV tuner.

But iRiver has yet to sign-off on the K2 project, Bejanoff admitted, which could mean that the gadget never sees the light of day.

According to Bejanoff, iRiver is working on a new e-book reader and internet tablet, which could arrive for in Australia for product testing "as soon as possible". It wasn’t revealed if either gadget will run on Android.
