Dot Hill has qualified Western Digital's 2TB drives and is going to launch a 24TB RAID array taking up just 2U of rack space.

It reckons this will be the first generally-available such device. The drives are WD RE4-GP or green power drives, boasting 500GB/platter areal density, and Dot Hill says a 24TB tray of them is up to 60 per cent more energy efficient than a 24TB tray of non-green power 1TB drives.

Total capacity of such a Dot Hill array, one combining several 2U shelves, is 216TB. Dot Hill says this increase in storage density is "a major milestone in the storage industry" which has itself and Western Digital at the forefront.

Dot Hill should enjoy being at the forefront while it can. Such major storage milestones come along every time 3.5-inch drive capacity is increased, and there will be another one next year or the one after when 3TB drives appear and then, probably, 4TB ones.

Dot Hill is already using the drives in existing array products, such as the 2330, 2530, 2730, 2730T, and 5730 storage arrays as well as the 2130 JBOD expansion arrays. ®
