A Geeks Guide2 ... Programming in Scala
Programming discounts at Reg Books
Geeks Guide2 Following on from last week's JavaOne Conference, we focus our GG2 attention on the Java Platform programming language Scala. Programming in Scala from Artima is co-authored by Scala creator himself Martin Odersky, and is a chapter-by-chapter tutorial which 'promises to help you master the Scala language and the important ideas about programming that Scala embodies.'
Weighing in at 736 pages and a whopping 33 chapters, the book is a wide-ranging look into Scala, aimed towards experienced non-Scala programmers or those looking to fine-tune their skills. The book doesn't require specific knowledge of programming languages, but expects you to be familiar with Java. So if you're about to start your programming career, while Scala is a great place to set out from, this book isn't.
Programming in Scala excels when read front-to-back rather than used as a quick reference. Each chapter is broken down into manageable chunks, featuring a range of examples for you to work through. Topics are introduced gradually and they use principles explained in earlier sections to help support your understanding. Every chapter is straight forward and easy to follow; however, in the rare occasion that an unknown term pops up (or you've skimmed too quickly), a comprehensive glossary and index is on hand to help you out.
By reading the book cover to cover you'll pick up the skills to write scripts and systems in Scala, write concurrent programs with actors, design embedded DSLs and a bunch more. Once you've finished it you should have a pretty firm grasp of the language. The book will then serve you well as a reference for future Scala projects, the conclusions at the end of each chapter really becoming a benefit.
So there you have it, Programming in Scala is a great book for keen programmers, offering an almost complete guide to everything Scala at a great GG2 price.
Programming in Scala is available at Register Books right now with a hefty 36.5% off the RRP and free post and packaging - saving Reg readers £14.42 plus the postage.
