TomTom has jumped on the iPhone 3G S bandwagon by launching a satnav application and car kit for the must-have smartphone.

Much like existing TomTom car kits, the 3G S-specific package is designed to stick onto your windscreen. It supports hands-free calling and will let you charge your phone while you’re driving thanks to a power cable that, presumably, hooks up to your motor’s ciggie lighter.

TomTom’s satnav app features turn-by-turn directions, which can be pumped out through the car kit’s loudspeaker. The app also includes IQ Routes and TeleAtlas’ “latest maps”.

It’s also claimed by TomTom that the car kit will give iPhone 3G S users an “enhanced GPS performance” – but it’s keeping mum about how this works, for now at least.

TomTom’s car kit will be available later this year, while the satnav app will go live shortly after Apple releases version 3.0 of its iPhone OS on 17 June. ®
