Microsoft has disclosed a bug in the Service Pack 2 update to SharePoint Server 2007 that causes the application to expire after 180 days.

The flaw improperly resets the product expiration date for the widely used program as if it was a trial installation, a SharePoint VP says here. It affects anyone who has installed SP2 on Office SharePoint Server 2007, Project Server 2007, Form Server 2007, Search Server 2008, and Search Server 2008 Express.

The good news is that the bug doesn't affect data integrity or otherwise meddle with the program configuration, and those affected have six months following the SP2 installation to remedy the flaw. SP2 was released on April 28, a Microsoft spokesman said.

Microsoft is working on a hotfix that will solve the issue. Those who need something immediately can re-enter their product ID number on the Convert License Type page in the program's central administration. Product ID numbers can be found by logging into Microsoft's Volume Licensing Service Center. The manual work-around works for all versions except for Search Server 2008 Express. Users of that program will have to wait for the hotfix. ®
