Mac users have been told not to install Apple’s latest update to OS X 10.5.7 if they are running VMware Fusion on a Mac that comes loaded with an ATI video card.

VMware Fusion is used to run virtual Windows operating systems. When it is used on a Mac Pro or iMac that has an ATI video card with 3D graphics enabled, the OS X 10.5.7 update is causing system crashes, slow performance and incorrect rendering.

Nvidia-equipped Macs are not affected by the glitch.

Apple and ATI are aware of the problem are working on a fix. In the meantime, users are required to disable 3D acceleration for any Windows apps.

“The ATI driver issue only affects 3D functionality in VMware Fusion. If your Windows applications do not need 3D, it will run just fine under VMware Fusion on Mac OS X 10.5.7,” said VMware in a blog post.

Apple pushed out the update earlier this week and since then many users have been grumbling about various snags in the release.

When version 10.5.6 came out in December last year, cockups with the update surfaced immediately. ®
