US firm prototypes 'mini HDMI'
Direct HD phone connection to your telly?
US firm Molex has designed a prototype miniature HDMI connector for use in portable gadgets, it’s been reported.
According to website Tech-On, the cable’s been designed for use with the likes of phones, compact and DSLR cameras, camcorders and laptops in mind.
For example, several HD mobile phones have already been announced – such as Samsung’s Omnia HD – though none yet feature an HDMI link to allow them to be connected to your TV.
Molex’s miniature HDMI plug still has the same 19 contacts found in a standard 13.9 x 4.4mm HDMI connector - referred to as ‘Type A’ - but would be roughly half its size.
It’s worth noting that there are more types of HDMI connection than the one you’ll find around the back of your PlayStation 3. Type C HDMI, for example, is also known as a mini-connector but at 11.2 x 3.2mm is still larger than Molex’s prototype offering.
Molex has not yet announced plans to develop its miniature HDMI cable further. ®
