IBM on Tuesday said it has purchased the software maker Exeros to help boost its data discovery toolbox.

The California-based firm (named after the Greek word for "tracker") makes software called Exeros Discovery, which acts like an internet spider to automatically discover relationships between databases.

IBM said it will use Exeros' technology in the new business analytics unit it created last month following a reorganization of its Global Business Services consulting biz.

"The combination of IBM and Exeros will enable companies to more intelligently manage their data across all formats and computing platforms, creating a smarter enterprise," Ambuj Goyal, general manager of IBM Information Management said in a statement.

Over the next several months, IBM intends to absorb Exeros into the firm's Information Management Software portfolio, where it has previously placed purchased firms like Cognos and DataMirror. Terms of IBM's purchase of Exeros were not disclosed. ®
