The continuing push to get the general public interested in Near Field Communications sees an RFID tag strapped to the back of an iPhone, and used to trigger various videos for reasons that remain obscure.

The demonstration offers nothing we've not seen before, as exemplified by the Mir:ror, but it bundles it into an iPhone - which instantly makes the technology sexy and accessible to consumers:

Quite why you would want to select videos by waving your iPhone near small plastic objects isn't clear, but consumer RFID has always been a technology desperately searching for a problem to solve.

Since the NFC Forum expanded its specification to incorporate everything from RFID to Oyster cards, the standard is claiming success. But while our credit cards are increasingly sporting wireless connections, everything else remains resolutely disconnected - despite the attempts of the industry to convince us otherwise. ®
