Networking equipment maker Nortel sacked 228 UK staff on Monday without a redundancy pay out.

Nortel Networks UK does not have to make redundancy payouts because it is in administration while its Canadian parent company is under bankruptcy protection. Those sacked will be eligible for a small statutory redundancy payment from the government.

Nortel has about 2,000 UK staff. Its main site is in Maidenhead, Berkshire, where about 1,200 people are employed. A spokeswoman for administrators Ernst and Young said the redundancies would be drawn from there and Harlow in Essex.

Some 86 workers in Northern Ireland were also cut, from a site in County Antrim.

Nortel announced plans to cut a total of 3,200 staff worldwide without redundancy pay in late February. ®
