As layoffs go, the ones that took place last week at commercial operating system maker Novell were pretty small, and a lot less than was originally reported out there on the Web.

CNET reported late on Friday that Novell was slashing up to 1,000 of its employees, which would have comprised about 25 per cent of its global workforce. But according to Ian Bruce, director of public relations at Novell, the job cuts were under 100, and that represents under 2.5 per cent of the 4,000-strong Novell workforce. Bruce says that Novell has not yet divulged where the layoffs will be made within the company.

Novell also said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that James Robinson, one of the high-profile directors on its board, will not seek re-election this year at the annual shareholder meeting. Formerly chairman and chief executive officer at American Express and chairman of Bristol-Myers Squibb, Robinson is the general partner of a tech venture capital firm called RRE Ventures. He has been into VC since 1994. He is currently a director at Coca-Cola and has been on the Novell board since 2001. ®
