'Bart Simpson' punts Church of Scientology
Fox none too pleased
It appears that Twentieth Century Fox is none too pleased with Nancy Cartwright's use of Bart Simpson to punt an upcoming Church of Scientology event in a "robo-calling" recording.
Committed Scientologist Cartwright, who has donated $10m to her favourite cult, begins her message with “Hey, what’s happening man, this is Bart Simpson... hahaha...” before revealing her true identity with "...just kidding don’t hang up this is Nancy Cartwright. And this is a very special phone call to you. I’m now auditing on new OT [Operating Thetan Level] Seven.”
The rest of the pitch for the 31 January Hollywood shindig features Cartwright's own voice interspersed with Bart, who insists at one point: “It’s gonna be a blast, man!"
A recording of the message found its way onto YouTube a couple of days back, but has now been pulled "due to a copyright claim by Twentieth Century Fox".
Al Jean, executive producer of The Simpsons, reportedly disclaimed: “This is not authorized by us. The Simpsons does not, and never has, endorsed any religion, philosophy or system of beliefs any more profound than Butterfinger bars."
Cartwright, 51, became a Scientologist in 1989, and attributes much of her subsequent success to the church, the Times notes. She said back in 2006: “Before Scientology I had one dream of making a living, from doing voice-overs for animation. After I became a Scientologist my abilities expanded so far and above what I originally dreamed that I've amazed even myself." ®
