JDA Software is buying i2 Technologies for $346m in borrowed cash.

The two supply chain specialists reckon they can find $20m in annual savings, and the combined company will have revenues of $635m - including $300m in annual maintenance and subscription fees.

The deal will create a big supply chain player to go up against the likes of Oracle, IBM, SAP and Software AG.

i2 gives JDA the ability to work with manufacturers of individual items and improving its retail and transport business.

Dr Pallab Chatterjee, i2's CEO, said that as the industry continues to consolidate there was an advantage in being big.

JDA is borrowing the cash for the deal from Credit Suisse and Wachovia. The deal is subject to approval from i2 shareholders and the usual regulators - the SEC.
