Google has bought Omnisio - a web video editing firm based in Palo Alto, California - which will be used to add extra functions to YouTube.

Ominisio allows you to edit video clips and add captions and slide shows to footage. The company, which only launched publicly at the end of March, was backed by seed funding investor Y Combinator.

Funnily enough, the founders all have a passing acquaintance with Stanford University. So, Google have once again pushed the boat out in scouring the world for talent.

Financial terms of the deal were not revealed.

YouTube introduced editing functions back in 2007, with help from Adobe, but they were rather limited and did not prove popular. YouTube said: "We believe we've only scratched the surface in terms of what's possible with online video, so stay tuned for other tools and features that will let you do even more with your videos."
