Fujitsu and friends arm four-core Opteron servers

Fujitsu Siemens Computers (FSC) is the latest hardware vendor to punt servers loaded with AMD’s four-core Opteron processor chip, which finally hit the channel – following months of production delays – last week.
The firm said today that the quad job is available in its Primergy RX330 S1, BX630 S2 blade servers and its entry-level Econel 230R server.
A heap of computer manufacturers have already jumped on the Opteron bandwagon. HP said last month that it would load its beefy, new 8-socket x86 ProLiant DL785 G5 server with the chip. It's also spicing up the lower-end and mid-range parts of the ProLiant family.
Earlier this week, AMD Dell announced that it had clasped the chip to its bosom by loading it on five of its server models.
Sun hasn't actually managed to produce an announcement for its Opteron boxes, although one can tell where the chip will go first. For example, Sun recently put the Sun Fire X4140 and X4440 servers on its site. This kit should receive the four-core parts as soon as possible. Super Micro, Rackable Systems, and Appro have all also announced support for the processors.
AMD, which has seen its stock price half in value over the past year, will be hoping to turn its troubled fortunes around now that the chip is finding its way onto major computer vendors' systems around the world.
The shipping delays led to a hefty drop in market share which rival Intel happily swallowed.
Barcelona was supposed to begin shipping to OEMs in September last year. However, a major technical bug forced the firm to postpone mass distribution of the processor while the problem was fixed. ®
