Nintendo has officially denounced speculation that it’s planning to release a third-generation DS handheld console at the E3 show this year.

Hirokazu Hamamura, president of games-magazine publisher Enterbrain, recently forecast that that's just what the games console pioneer is planning. The E3 gaming conference takes place in July.

Unfortunately, Nintendo has since stepped in to try to kill the rumour, which led some reports to dub to anticipated upgrade either the ‘Liter’ or the ‘Extreme’.

The company said in a statement that it “cannot comment on the specifics of what will be announced at E3, but at the very least there won't be anything like what Mr. Hamamura suggested, so we would like to clearly deny this”.

Nintendo's statement isn’t all bad news though, because it does at least confirm that the company's planning to announce some goodies the E3 conference – even if it’s not a third-generation DS.

More to the point, perhaps, Nintendo doesn't deny its working on a new DS, only that it won't be announcing it at E3.
