Go!Messenger VoIP for 'fat' PSPs coming on Friday

The PlayStation Portable’s (PSP) Go!Messenger service will finally go live on Friday, bringing VoIP and IM to owners of the first-gen PSP left in the cold by the recent Skype release.

A teaser icon for Go!Messenger appeared last month alongside the launch of Skype for the PSP, but until today gamers only knew that Go!Messenger was coming at some point in February.

Skype only runs on second-generation, 'slim'n'light' PSPs, a fact that's narked more than a few owners of the older, 'fat' version of the handheld console.

Go!Messenger will work with all PSPs, Sony told Register Hardware today, but it's limited to communication with other Go!Messenger users. So, unlike Skype, there's no calling mobiles or landlines too.

You'll need the Go!Cam add-on to make video calls, which costs about £45 (€65/$90). However, Go!Messenger is a free application and calls made to other Go!Messenger users are free.

Go!Messenger can be downloaded from Friday.
