UK mobile operator O2 is rejigging its mobile tariffs to make them simpler and offering a flat rate data charge of £1 a day.

Pay monthly tariffs will be aligned with six price points to which you can add seven "Bolt Ons" of extra calls, texts or data.

The new price points will include a £1 a day for mobile browsing for occasional users - access is about 4 to 5p a page but will be capped once they reach £1.

iPhone tariffs are also changing. O2 said: "Customers on a £35 per month contract will get three times more minutes and more than double the number of texts than before." Customers currently get 200 minutes and 200 texts for their £35.

But the £55 a month tariff is disappearing - you'll get the same minutes and text for £45 or you can upgrade to £75. For £75 a month you get 3,000 minutes and 500 texts.

Raymond Yu, analyst at Ovum, said: "The iPhone changes will please existing users but probably won't be enough to pull in a lot of new customers - the price of the handset is still the problem. But it's a good idea to simplify tariffs and good for customers too - we're likely to see other operators follow suit."

The tariffs are available from 1 February. ®
