DivX-encoded content looks set to be available across a wider range of multimedia devices, following its handshake with chip manufacturer AMD.

The two companies have signed a licensing agreement that’ll allow AMD to include DivX’s video technology with its Xilleon processor range. AMD and DivX are yet to decide which specific Xilleon processors will be included in the deal, but since rather a lot of HDTVs contain Xilleon chips, the potential is huge. Ditto mobile phones and other digital devices.

AMD obtained Xilleon through its $5.4bn acquisition of ATI in July 2006.

DivX content is already certified for a plethora of devices, ranging from hi-def DVD players and portable video units, to mobile phones, such as LG’s Viewty - reviewed here.
