Samsung has rolled out its first "ultra-durable" mobile phone, and with its water-, dust- and shock-resistant shell, the Samsung M110 Solid mounts a chunky challenge to Sonim's "indestructible" XP1.

Samsung's Solid: rubber clad

According to Samsung, the 92g Solid's clad in "thick rubber". Within lies a dual-band (900/1800MHz) GSM/GPRS phone with a VGA camera on the back, an FM radio and Bluetooth. The camera has a flash that can double-up as a torch.

All of which makes it eminently suitable for outdoor types, be they builders, ramblers or mountaineers, Samsung said. It'll withstand drops of up to 1m, apparently.

Folk venturing to remote locations may fancy the Solid's SOS key which auto-sends a 'Help!' text message to a nominated handset if the button's press three times in rapid succession. Once the alert is sent, the next call to come in is automatically answered - reception permitting, or course.

The Samsung Solid is available from O2 and is free with any 12-month contract, or £60 on PAYG.
